Mind and Time
Philosophical and Psychological Perspectives
Abstract
Mind and time are elusive. No grand theory has yet emerged that would have provided a fundamental solution to the many puzzles and perplexities associated with the two terms. There is even no consensus on the use of the concepts “mind” and “time.” This situation is neither a semantic nor a theoretical disaster. Instead, it leads to the challenging interdisciplinary task of elaborating the connections between neuroscientific findings, psychometric approaches, and investigations in the disciplines of psychology, philosophy of science, epistemology, philosophy of language, and philosophy of mind. The contributions in this volume explore in an interdisciplinary division of labor the semantic, systematic, and empirical constellations of mind and time. They dispense with grand theory and limit themselves to tracing those contours of mind and time accessible with their respective methods from which, in the end, a larger picture can emerge. Zusammenfassung
Geist und Zeit sind schwer fassbar. Es hat sich noch keine große Theorie herausgebildet, die eine grundlegende Lösung für die vielen Rätsel und Verwirrungen im Zusammenhang mit den beiden Begriffen bieten würde. Es gibt nicht einmal einen Konsens über die Verwendung der Begriffe "Geist" und "Zeit". Diese Situation ist weder eine semantische noch eine theoretische Katastrophe. Vielmehr führt sie zu der anspruchsvollen interdisziplinären Aufgabe, die Verbindungen zwischen neurowissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen, psychometrischen Ansätzen und Untersuchungen in den Disziplinen Psychologie, Wissenschaftstheorie, Erkenntnistheorie, Sprachphilosophie und Philosophie des Geistes herauszuarbeiten. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes erkunden in interdisziplinärer Arbeitsteilung die semantischen, systematischen und empirischen Konstellationen von Geist und Zeit. Sie verzichten auf eine große Theorie und beschränken sich darauf, jene Konturen von Geist und Zeit nachzuzeichnen, die mit ihren jeweiligen Methoden zugänglich sind und aus denen sich am Ende ein größeres Bild ergeben kann.
