Viele Medien und Medieninhalte zielen auf die Emotionen ihrer Rezipient_innen. Hierzu hat sich eine reiche Theorieund Forschungslandschaft etabliert, die neben klassischen Ansätzen auch neuere Überlegungen bietet. Zu den Klassikern gehören die MoodManagement-Theorie, die Annahmen zu affektiven Dispositionen, zum Excitation Transfer und zum Entstehen von Spannung. Überlegungen zum Sad-Film-Paradoxon und zum Moral Disengagement gehören zu den neueren Ansätzen, die zumeist Desiderate der klassischen Erklärungen adressieren. Da wir zunehmend Medien nicht nur rezipieren, sondern mit ihnen interagieren (Computer/Roboter), sind in diesem Bereich ebenfalls psychologische Zugänge entstanden wie die MediaEquation-Annahme und die Forschung zum Uncanny Valley.
