Die Funktion von Wissen wird traditionell in verschiedener Hinsicht als ambivalent betrachtet, vor allem in Beziehungsfragen: Beispielsweise besteht zumeist dann kein besonderes Interesse an einer Kenntnis geheimer Dinge, wenn dadurch eine wichtige Beziehung problematisch werden könnte. Hinter der volkstümlichen Akzeptanz von Unwissenheit und Ignoranz steckt insofern die richtige Einsicht, daß "Erwerb und Akkumulation von Wissen ... nicht nur eine positive Erweiterung der Welterfahrung, sondern eben auch ... eine Potenzierung von Konfliktmöglichkeiten" bedeuten.
